Pirate Baseball Team Shows Why The Games Are Played, Earn Regional Berth
Tuesday, June 7, 2011
Following the Pasco Pirate baseball teams first round win last week over Ridgewood, I left the Wesley Chapel complex among a group of fans with the conversations centering on the next night’s semifinal game against the top seed Wildcats. One group was discussing who would pitch while others were giving their opinions about the fourth seed Pirates chances against the top seed Wildcats. While not speaking verbally I thought, “We have two chances-slim and none.”
Since I was not a player, coach, parent or grandparent I figured I could think objectively. I knew the Wildcats had already beaten the Pirates twice, that they won 22 straight regular season games and had a well- rested BRANDON MUMAW ready to pitch. The Pirates, who had faltered poorly the last two weeks, had used top pitchers TREY DUDLEY-GILES and COLE STANCIL in the Ridgewood game. After pitching three strong innings against Ridgewood, Cole went the distance against the Cats and according to his battery mate TYLER BROCK, he pitched his best game of the season. As a team the Big Red showed why the games are played. The win clinched a regional playoff berth.
Lady Pirates Blank Knights 2-0 Win Tuesday Earned Trip To Final Four
The Pasco Lady Pirate softball team behind the 1-hit pitching of COURTNEY BRANDT and an inside-the-park homerun by VANESSA MILLS blanked River Ridge 2-0 last Friday night. The locals with a win over Harmony this past Tuesday evening earned a trip to the Class 4A final four. After dropping the district championship game to Mitchell Friday night the baseball team travels to Brooksville tonight (Wednesday) to play District 4A-8 champion Hernando. District 4A-7 champion Mitchell will host the Land 0’ Lakes Gators. Once again the Pirates baseball team chances are slim, but remember WESLEY CHAPEL. Maybe I can be just as wrong.
