Lady Pirate’s Softball & Wildcats Baseball Teams Are Tournament
Wednesday, April 13, 2011
With the District 4A-7 softball tournament being played this week, followed by the baseball tourney next week, the Pasco Lady Pirates and Wesley Chapel Wildcats enter as the favorite teams. Wesley chapel could bring a perfect record into the single elimination tournament beginning next week.
The defending champion Wildcats, coached by CHUCK YINGLING, had a perfect 22-0 record entering the final week of regular season play. While it likely will add extra pressure to enter the eight team tournament undefeated you can bet the Cats would like to win every game they play.
Pitching has been the strong point for the Wildcats this season. Seniors BRANDON MUMAW and MATT WYNN are the top two hurlers for the Cats. Mumaw won his first 15 games and is the ace of the staff. Both pitchers along with CODY SCHAUBERT and ZACH WHITE have swung the big bats for the locals this season.
In this week’s softball tournament, the Lady Pirates likely will have to get past the Mitchell Mustangs to win the eight team tournament. The Pirates of Coach LISA HERNDON have been led on the mound by senior COURTNEY BRANDT and rapidly improving junior EMILY PENNINGTON. Brandt and JORDAN LANE leads a Pirate offensive attack that is capable of scoring a lot of runs.
In both tournaments, the first and second place teams will advance to the next level of play. The district winner will earn the right to play the first round at home while the second place team will have to travel. Both will compete against the district winner and runner-up from District 4A-8. Both the Wesley Chapel baseball and Pasco softball teams are favorites but both realize they will have to be ready to play their three district games. They must win their first two games or their season is over.
