Splurge On Sundaes Is Theme Of HPH Hospice Open House

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

HPH Hospice is in need of volunteers in East Pasco to assist with various programs said HPH Hospice spokeswoman Jan Double.
Splurge on Sundaes is the theme of an Ice Cream Social and open house that will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at the HPH Hospice team office, 37445 Clinton Avenue, Dade City. Prospective volunteers may tour the facility during the event.
“So many of our volunteers are seasonal so the number of volunteers we have significantly decreases through the summer.Ideally, we want year-round volunteers, but we gladly accept seasonal volunteers.Volunteers at HPH Hospice can be involved in as many areas as possible, depending on their talents and their preferences,” Double said.
Some of the services volunteers provide include making quilts for patients’ beds; sewing projects; preparing light meals; patient and family support in patients’ homes or in HPH Hospice Houses and Hospice Care Centers. Volunteers may also read to patients, write letters for patients, provide respite care (sit with a patient while a family member runs an errand or needs to rest).
Other activities volunteers may participate in include playing games or cards, being a family friend and greeting guests at HPH Hospice’s residential facilities. Also, volunteers may make monthly phone calls to HPH family members as a part of the Bereavement Telephone Support Program; help with the Children’s Assistance Program (CAP); be a courier or work in one of HPH Hospice’s Thrift Stores.
Volunteers are never asked to do anything that would make them feel uncomfortable. In fact, many times, our volunteers decide which areas of service they prefer to work, Double said. “The only skill you need as a volunteer is the ability to share your compassion and caring with others. Many of our volunteers have had previous experience with hospice, and see volunteering as a way to give back the care and concern their loved one received at HPH Hospice,” Double said.
